The ODBC 2 JSON Gateway provide the ability to access data residing in a 32-Bit database server from Microsoft Power BI Gateway or any other software than can read data in JSON format.

The gateway works with an ODBC driver to access data and converts the data to JSON that can be accessed from the built in web service api . The driver that you use must be on the same machine as the gateway.

The gateway can be installed on the machine running the database server, the machine running Microsoft Power BI gateway or on a third machine as a standalone. Each configuration has its advantages and disadvantages. The considerations when determining where to install the gateway are network traffic, operating system platform availability, hardware resources and storage.
